Best Dystopian Novels-Top Five Dystopian Books

Good Dystopian books depict certain fictional social and political structures, often an apocalyptic setting is portrayed. So you spend your days picturing all the dark places we are going in the future? Think your government is oppressing you but they say it’s “for your own good”? Aren’t you the optimist! If you need any help overthrowing the government, feel free to use the best dystopian novels as general guidelines.

Good Dystopian Books – The Ultimate Top Five Ranking

5. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

As per the general theme of most of the best dystopian novels, in “Brave New World”, the government has created the perfect society. Here, through genetic engineering and brainwashing – oh, and drugs. But there is one man who feels uneasy in this society and he quickly learns that something is terribly wrong in the world he lives in.

If you want to witness how Aldous Huxley literally predicted the future (to some extend) 80 years ago, this trailblazer for dystopian books is a must read for you!

4. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Doesn’t every teenager feel ugly at one point in their life? Scott Westerfeld delivers the perfect solution for that.

In the “Uglies”-universe, you only have to suffer through your own ugliness until you turn 16 and get your very special “My Super Sweet 16”-plastic surgery to become a “Pretty”! Wow! Sounds awesome! … or does it?

“Uglies” is a must-read for all dystopian novel fans, and particularly for teenagers who still believe that being good-looking is the most important thing in the world. It isn’t.

3. The Maze Runner (Book 1) by James Dashner

In “The Maze Runner”, the main protagonist Thomas finds himself being transported somewhere he doesn’t know in a lift. He has no memory of being taken or even of his life so far. When the lift finally opens, he is being welcomed by a group of boys – and they’re all trapped in a big field surrounded by a maze. But who put them there, and why?

“The Maze Runner” is extremely thrilling, extremely fast-paced (pun intended) and definitely a story for everyone. There is a reason why this masterpiece among the good dystopian books has been made into a movie this year, and before you go to the cinema, I urge you to read it first.

2. Divergent by Veronica Roth

In a dystopian Chicago, the society is divided into five different groups, the factions. Candor, the honest. Abnegation, the selfless. Dauntless, the brave. Amity, the peaceful. And Erudite, the intelligent. Together, these factions create the perfect society with the perfect set of skilled people. And this system seems to work – unless there are people that cannot be categorized into one of these factions. Beatrice Prior is one of them, and that makes her a dangerous threat.

“Divergent” is one of the best dystopian novels that has been published in recent years. It has strong characters, incredible plot twists and constantly makes you thirsty for more. Just like “The Maze Runner”, this book has also been made into a movie. And while the movie is a pretty good adaption, it doesn’t beat the book. So hurry! Read!

1. The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

Ah, “The Hunger Games” … do I even need to tell you why this is without a doubt the best dystopian novel out there?

In Panem, the government forces its people to participate and watch a live TV show, where twelve boys and twelve girls are forced to fight each other in an arena, until only one of them lives. This event is called The Hunger Games.

Children killing children? Yes, it is as brutal and cruel as it sounds. One day, Primrose Everdeen gets chosen to participate in this gruesome game, but her big sister, Katniss Everdeen, volunteers to take her place to die in her stead. She has no hope of ever returning back to her family, but she also gave her sister the promise to win the Hunger Games.

I have read many, many books in my life, but I don’t remember feeling such vivid emotions with every word that I read with any other book before “The Hunger Games”. The story is told from Katniss’ point of view, and it is told in such a brilliant way that every thought this girl utters immediately becomes your own thought and you feel like it’s you trying not to get killed, not Katniss.

This book isn’t just a must-read for fans of dystopian novels, it’s a must-read for literally everyone, no exceptions. And no, the movie is not a good substitute.
